Study / Potential for the integration of low-carbon gases in industry
With 18 % of the french CO2eq emissions, industry is one of the main GES emitting sectors and is faced with high stakes decarbonisation challenges. According to the Stratégie Nationale Bas Carbone (SNBC, = National low carbon strategy), industry must reduce its emissions by 35 % from 2015 to 2030, and by 81 % from 2015 to 2050. In order to reach these goals, the decarbonisation of the industrial energy mix is essential. Thermal processes in particular represent today 258 TWh of annual consumption, among wich 240 TWh is non-electric. 61 % of this consumption is attributable to furnaces and 27 % to drying processes.
One of the promising processes decarbonation solutions lies in the use of low carbon gases, as alternative energy carriers in substitution to fossil gases.
This study gives an overview of the first projects feedback and the developing technologies for the integration in thermal processes of biogas, biomethane, hydrogen, synthetic gases, methane from Power-to-Gas and pyrogazeification. The potential for integration of these gases in industry is analysed using numerous criteria : carbon footprint reduction, availability, stability, economic competitivity, technical barriers to integration, CO2 and energy prices evolution... The study comprises focuses on specific sectors and applications.
